Ron,
The audition was interesting. I was under
the impression that I was auditioning for the
lead key position but that was not the case.
They have a pianist that has
been with the Church for a long time.
But ... after speaking with the other members,
they are itching for someone who can play piano
other than what is written on sheet music and add color
and depth.
Well .. that's me. I got
the job.
I had to cold play off a lead
sheet. I would never have been able to do
that prior to taking your lessons.
They said I would be able to
work my way into lead key roles as time went on.
The group is a nice bunch of
people and we also get to accompany a Choir.
I cannot wait to introduce
them to a little Gospel.

How to Start Learning to Play Piano Tonight...

GRAB your keyboard... or go to your
piano! Just START with playing - one note
after another, and keep going.
As the Japanese say, "A journey of a thousand miles
begins with the first, step." AND, if the very
first step leads to the first slip, be glad for it.
YOU CAN'T, repeat, CANNOT LEARN without MISTAKES!
Now... start to THINK more personally about your
instrument. The piano/keyboard, like the
guitar, is a "TOUCHY" instrument. Touch
it, and you both produce and color its tones, like a
potter molding clay. Think of the keys, all gleaming
white, as the "SKIN" of the piano; you can either please
them or HURT them. STROKE them, and
the sound will come out mellow and
purring. |

POKE them, and the sound will either "bark" sharply or
woodenly "thud." STOP thinking of yourself
as playing "ON" or "AT" the piano. Rather, think of
the instrument as an extension of your own body.
When an artificial leg is fitted to an amputee, he or she is
then taught to walk with it. Gradually, it feels
more natural - more like his or her own leg walking. |

The French call the keys "les touches," or
"touch-points" - as if the keys, not you, were doing
the feeling. EVERY musician wants
to personalize their instrument. Take a
look at the vocalist who hugs his or her guitar, or
without a guitar, "woos" his or her microphone, or,
without a microphone, simply "woos" the audience?
EVERY musician seeks to make their instrument an
extension of their own body, the tool he or she needs to
put across the strong feelings they have for the music. |

Select a "rhythm"
pattern on your keyboard... (ROCK, POP, LATIN...etc.) OR Select a comfortable tempo on your metronome, if you're using an acoustic piano!

Adjust the tempo...
where you can play at a comfortable speed. PLEASE
DON'T TRY TO PLAY TOO FAST!

Practice playing a
consistent "bass" pattern in your left hand -
one that is appropriate for the rhythm pattern you
selected. Try to keep a consistent beat! PLAY
LIKE A BASS PLAYER.

If you don't know a bass
pattern, just play one note! Make sure you're
playing in time, to the rhythm.

REPEAT the bass pattern at
least 20 times!
-
Once you can maintain a
consistent pattern in your left hand, try to play a SIMPLE
melody in your right hand.

REMEMBER... you don't
have to become a "piano playing" acrobat to play piano
well! IT'S ABOUT MAKING MUSIC!

repetition is

I

Although, I have only been a piano student for a little over a year and a half, I have seen much progress as I look back!
I had absolutely no music experience or training back then, and didn't even know where to place my fingers on the keyboard!
I have realized that by practicing each lesson over and over and over, that it gets easier and is now FUN.
Everyday I practice a Hanon exercise BEFORE I start any practices. I never knew that it would be so much fun playing a piano.
I am a 56 years young husband and father, and with music in my family's life, it just allows each day to go a little smoother. I find myself humming more, replaying a particular song in my mind, and can't wait to try and play it when I get home!
Very therapeutic... I have no idea where this musical journey will take me, but the learning and applications are a good challenge, yet rewarding.
Local senior citizens on a few occasions, and even though I am still at a beginner's level... they are so happy to hear me play! I am still learning various scales, chords, keys and terminology... and there is SOOOO much to learn!
